2  Destin Inshore Fishing / Inshore Fishing Reports / Sheepshead Bite Turning On on: February 04, 2014, 04:30:21 pm
Sheepshead have started to get thick around the jetties and bridges in and around the local passes to the Gulf.  Try using live shrimp, fidler crabs, and oysters to catch them.  If the water is clear, try down sizing your leaders to 12-15 fluorocarbon.  Use either a drop rig or a carolina style rig with a small #1-1/0 circle hook.  Tide doesn't seem to matter too much for a better bite, but we usually try to plan our trip around a slack tide, just because it's easier to chum, hold up around pilings, and feel that finicky bite.  We fished this past weekend and caught 20 in about two hrs.  Not a lot of real big fish, but great eating size.  The bite should continue through this month, so get it while you can!!

4  Destin Inshore Fishing / Inshore Fishing Reports / Early December Report on: December 04, 2013, 11:33:10 am
What's happening guys?  Hope your Thanksgiving went good!!  Fishing has been really good here this week.  The flounder have finally made their way to the inshore wrecks, within 5 miles of the passes, and are stacked up thick.  You can catch them on artificial baits like Gulp, but the best baits are live bull minnows or small finger mullet.  Use a small #1-1/0 hook, 3oz lead, and a 12-14" 20lb leader.  Try to fish right around the wrecks or on top of them.  You can also anchor up or drift right outside the pass on the drop off around the C-Bouy.  Most fish are 12-14" but there's been some 16-18" fish as well.

Another species to target is the big bull redfish.  They've been thick.  You can fish for them in a bunch of different ways.  One is trolling along the drop offs in the bay with stretch rapala style lures.  You can also troll along the beach in 15-25ft of water as well.  Most people are crusing the bay looking for birds diving though.  If you find the birds, you usually can find the redfish.  Try throwing large paddle tail plastic baits, jerk baits, or even top water.  The fish are hungry, so it's just a matter of finding them.  Go from flock to flock of birds and try this technique, eventually you'll find them.

Good luck guys, catch em' up!!
5  Destin Inshore Fishing / Inshore Fishing Reports / Choctawhatchee Bay Report 10/22/2013 on: October 22, 2013, 04:16:00 pm
How's it going guys?  Here's a short fishing report from the last couple days.  Fishing is really starting to get good!!

With the cooler weather finally showing itself, the inshore bite has continued to get better and better everyday. This time of year the big bull reds start showing up on the beaches and flats in and around our local bays. For some reason that October full moon just triggers them and they start coming out from hiding. The best and most fun way to catch them is to find a pretty day, not much wind, lots of sunshine, and get up in a tower or platform and sight fish for them. They seem to always be hungry, so I usually start off with a top water lure to get a good bite out of them. You can also throw soft plastics, fly, etc and get plenty of bites. You can find them really all day long; no time is better than another. You'll find schools off them on the beaches from one end to the other. In the back water, look for birds diving or fish close to the passes.

If you have any questions about catching some of these big reds, make sure to message me or give us a call at 850-837-9306 or check us out at inshorefishingdestin.com.
6  Destin Inshore Fishing / Inshore Fishing Reports / Early October Report on: October 07, 2013, 04:59:00 pm
What's up guys?  The fishing has been a little tough this first week of October.  Between the wind, neap tide, and a "hurricane" hitting us, it's been pretty tough so far this month.  Right now the forecast looks good, with winds out of the north becoming lighter as the week goes on.  The inshore bite has continued to be very good though.  Still lots of big trout and quite a few slot redfish too.  The grass flats on both the north and south side of the bays have been good.  As this weather continues to cool down, they'll stay better, longer up in the day.  The dock lights in the bayous in the deeper water have been good.  If you can find live shrimp they're by far the best bait.  If you can't find them, try looking for small mullet or menhaden and pitch them into the lights with really light flurocarbon leaders, 10-12lb.  The slot reds can be caught on the grass flats with Gulp jerk baits and shrimp behind a popping cork.  If you can find an area where the water's clear and you can see good, try spot casting the reds using the same bait, but no popping cork.  There's still a few schools of bluefish and ladyfish around.  If you see those busting with birds diving, they will more than likely have redfish and a few trout mixed in too.  Try casting a heavier lure, jerk bait, or gold spoon past the school and let it sink down to the bottom.  Work it underneath the school if possible and you'll usually come up with a few bites that way from reds and trout.  The flounder are starting to congregate around the mouths of the bayous.  Try fishing docks and bridges at the entrances to them, bumping a Gulp swimming mullet, Hardnose mullet, or even a live mullet, right at the bottom.  Now's the best time to target them before they head to the Gulf.  Good luck and catch em' up!!
7  Destin Inshore Fishing / Inshore Fishing Reports / Choctawhatchee Bay Report 09/25/2013 on: September 25, 2013, 03:52:01 pm
How's it going guys?  Here's the latest inshore report from the Ships Chandler Guide Service.

The inshore bite has really turned on in the last couple weeks and should continue to get better and better as the cooler weather approaches.  This is by far our favorite time of the year for all types of fishing, especially inshore for reds and trout.

The redfish bite has been very good as of late.  You can find the bigger bull reds stacked up around the jetties and local bridges.  The bite has been much better on an outgoing tide.  The biggest thing you can do to help you get more bites is finding the right baits.  Bait is everything when it comes to big redfish.  Right now, big croakers and spot minnows is where it's at.  The 5-8" bait are the ones you want.  The best way to find bait is to cast net around the drop offs in the local bayous or use a sabiki rig tipped with squid.  It may take you a while to find the bait, but you'll get twice the bites, so it's worth it.  The slot fish are starting to show up good around the deeper docks in the bayous and on the grass flats.  Around the docks use finger mullet, shrimp, or menhaden.  With the cooler nights, the grass flats have been good, longer, up in the day.  Try throwing top waters and submersibles, (mirrordines, mirrodine minis, and badonkadonks) in the early morning and late afternoons.  One big tip this time of the year, follow the mullet.  When you see the big schools of mullet, cast towards the back side of the school with jerk baits or a gold spoon.

The trout bite is on fire.  It's been the best couple weeks for BIG trout that we may have ever seen.  There's plenty of fish on the grass flats.  Fish for them the same way you would for redfish, top waters, etc in the mornings and late afternoons.  The lights are still holding fish very good, just not the real big ones.  If you're hunting the real big trout, you need the big bait.  The same big bait you're using for the redfish (croakers, etc), use those.  Try finding sandy pot holes in 4-8ft of water in grass beds and soak some baits there.  You'll be surprised at the size of bait a big trout will eat.

The flounder are slowly starting to show up.  We've been catching a few around the mouths of the bayous around docks.  It shouldn't be long though before they start to show up good.

With the Destin Fishing Rodeo fastly approaching, we'll start posting more frequent reports.  Good luck fishing!!
